Air Canada pilots received 98% of the votes in favor of a strike on September 17
Air Canada pilots have won an overwhelming vote in favour of giving their union a mandate to strike, according to a combination of English-language media reports.

Air Canada strike

The Air Line Pilots Association, which represents Air Canada's more than 5,400 pilots, said on Thursday that a strike authorization vote was overwhelmingly approved by 98 per cent, with a 21-day cooling-off period allowing them to strike as early as September 17.

Talks have been going on since the middle of last year and Air Canada said it had made progress and hoped to reach an agreement, but could not rule out a strike. As Canada's largest airline, once Air Canada pilots began to strike, it will inevitably have a considerable impact on residents across the country.

Air Canada announced that customers with tickets from Sept. 15 to 23 can rebook free of charge on flights departing through Nov. 30 at the same location. Cancellations and changes after 23 days will be waived, but the difference in fare will be charged. If a passenger cancels a flight, the fare will be retained for future purchase of Air Canada tickets.

This policy applies to all flights operated by Air Canada, including Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express operated by Jazz or PAL, and Air Canada Holidays.

According to CityNews, Air Canada employees have been negotiating with the airline since June 2023. Now, Air Canada pilots have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike.

On the afternoon of the 27th, Air Canada employees held protests at Terminal 1 of Toronto Pearson Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Montreal International Airport and Winnipeg International Airport.

Charlene HudyCharlene Hudy, head of the Air Canada division of the union Air Line Pilots Association, said: "Our goal is to reach an agreement; However, our employers at the bargaining table are not listening to our demands for fair pay, retirement benefits and improved quality of life, prompting us to strike."

According to the latest data from Flight Centre Travel Group, flight fares to major Canadian cities are up an average of 14 per cent over the past year. Canada's airlines have experienced a number of significant fare increases, despite reduced capacity.

Just before, due to the failure of negotiations, Canadian railway chose to officially enter the general strike from the 26th (Sungreen Logistics has published an article: Canadian railway 26 officially entered the general strike).
