Maersk, Evergreen, Yangming Shipping announced the US East port surcharge
The risk of strike by dockworkers on the East coast of the United States continues to rise, and Maersk, Evergreen Shipping and Yangming Shipping have announced related surcharges.
On September 23, Maersk issued an announcement saying that the company is closely monitoring the negotiations between the East Coast Ports Union (ILA) and the United States Maritime Union (USMX).
At the same time, in order to compensate for the additional operating costs arising from the service Disruption, Maersk has introduced a Local Port Disruption Surcharge for all shipments to and from the US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, effective October 21, at the following rates: $1500 /TEU, $3000 /FEU.
According to Taiwan media reports, Evergreen Shipping recently said that since October 23, it will charge emergency port surcharges for global cargo to the eastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico, the fee standard is: 2,400 US dollars /TEU, 3,000 US dollars /FEU.
In addition, Yangming Shipping will also add a port congestion surcharge to the region from October 23, charging a standard of $800 /TEU and $1,000 /FEU.
Previously, CMA, Hapag-Lloyd and HMM have also announced related surcharges.
On September 18, CMA CGM announced that it would impose a port surcharge on imports and exports from the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, effective October 11.
Among them, for the export of goods from the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, the port of origin surcharge is levied, and the fee is: $800 /TEU and $1,000 /FEU for dry and tank cases, and $1,000 /TEU and $1,500 /FEU for refrigerated and special cases. At the same time, a port of destination surcharge will be imposed on all imports from the East Coast and Gulf Coast regions of the United States, and all cases will be charged at $1,500 /TEU.
Hapag-lloyd has introduced a work interruption surcharge of US $1,000 /TEU for shipments from all ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Oceania and Latin America to the US East Coast and Gulf Coast, effective October 18.
HMM imposes a port of destination surcharge for imports from the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, with a fee standard of $1,500 /TEU and $3,000 /FEU, effective from October 19.
It is understood that on September 17, local time, the United States East Coast port Union issued an announcement that it would begin a strike on October 1, and asked employers represented by the American Maritime Union to provide new labor contracts, while fighting for wages that match the high profits of sea carriers.
At present, a large number of goods originally shipped to the eastern port of the United States are being transferred to the western port of the United States, and the freight rate of the eastern route has fallen sharply. Mr Delury expects rates to fall further in the coming weeks.
