More than $3 billion in losses and a strike by Canada Postal workers will delay deliveries
Tens of thousands of postal workers across Canada began a three-day strike Wednesday to demand higher wages and better working conditions, bringing operations at Canada Post to a complete halt.

A strike by 55,000 Canada Post workers will delay deliveries

The Canadian Postal Workers Union, which represents about 55,000 postal workers, began a 72-hour nationwide strike Monday. The union had been negotiating with Canada Post for a year over pay, working conditions and other issues, but the talks broke down. The union issued a strike notice on Wednesday (local time).

The CUPW said in a press release that "after a year of fruitless negotiations, postal employees have made the difficult decision to strike".

Canada Post issued a notice saying that postal operations will be suspended during the strike, the processing or delivery of mail and packages will be delayed, and some post offices will be closed. Labour Minister Mackinnon said the federal government, which has acted twice this year to end labor disputes in other industries, was focused on reaching a deal at the negotiating table and would not consider forcing an end to the strike.

Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon said: "I'm not looking at any other solution than negotiations." "We will continue to do everything possible to support the parties and make sure they can try to reach a negotiated agreement."

Sungreen Logistics has learned that the postal service has lost more than $3 billion since 2018, and this is not the first time that Canada Post has had a work stoppage; union members went on rotating strikes in 2018 and 2011, and Canada Post also closed staff positions during the latter strike.

Mail deliveries alone reached 296 million last year, up 3.7 percent from 2022. It's just that Canada Post is still losing ground in the parcel market, with its market share dropping from 62 per cent in 2019 to 29 per cent in 2023.

Canada Post warned in a statement Friday that "strike activity will cause customers to experience delays," affecting millions of Canadians and businesses. Services in remote and northern areas that rely on Canada Post for delivery will be shut down.
