Supporting the decarbonization of air cargo, Maersk collaborates with Lufthansa Cargo
Lufthansa Cargo has signed an agreement with Maersk to promote the decarbonization of air cargo through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 1,200 metric tons.
Lufthansa Cargo will use 400 metric tons of SAF on behalf of Maersk for the remainder of 2024, a significant contribution to a year-end business that traditionally has a high volume of freight.
Morten Bo Christiansen, Head of Energy Transition at AP Moller-Maersk, said: "Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air transport is one of the most challenging tasks in the process of decarbonising global logistics and supply chains. That is why we are pleased to partner with Lufthansa Freight on this important mission." As one of the world's largest logistics companies, Maersk aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 across all modes of transport, as well as other business areas such as warehousing and container terminals. The adoption and availability of SAF in the aviation industry is still limited. Our agreement with Lufthansa Freight enables Maersk to contribute to increased adoption."
"SAF is a key technology enabler for more sustainable flight and is critical to the aviation energy transition. Together with Maersk, we have made a valuable contribution through the new agreement. At the same time, more sustainable flying will require significant efforts to modernize the fleet and improve the efficiency of flight operations. It is only through this interaction that sustainable change can be achieved." Ashwin Bhat, chief executive of Lufthansa Freight.
