The Teamsters union of America announced that Amazon warehouse workers across the country began a strike at 6 a.m. Et on Thursday, December 19.
The worker protest was aimed at seven Amazon.com Inc. warehouses across the United States, Workers on the picket line include Amazon employees affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and truck drivers who work in and out of Amazon warehouses.
As the largest and most diverse union in the United States, the Teamsters have long been a staunch defender of freight drivers and warehouse workers. Currently, nearly 10,000 Amazon workers have joined the Teamsters and are fighting for higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions.
The International Teamsters Union is holding a national organizing campaign at Amazon, which has long opposed unionization. The second largest U.S. labor union had previously given Amazon until Dec. 15 to agree to a date for negotiations, citing progress in unionization movements across the United States.
The nationwide strike action is mainly aimed at Amazon's repeated illegal resistance to negotiations, ignoring union formation and contract deadlines.
The strike will affect eight popular warehouses in New York DBK4, Atlanta DGT8, Southern California DFX4, DAX5, DAX8, San Francisco DCK6, Skokee, Illinois DIL7, and more potential warehouses. At present, Amazon is in the peak season, many warehouses are full of goods, and the logistics pressure is huge. If it loses the operation of these eight warehouses again, Amazon may face a full-scale logistics crisis, and the wave of parcel delays may be unavoidable.
The Teamsters union says it will fight until it wins, and that the fight for union recognition of the contract with the Amazon Teamsters will be won.
In a recent statement, the Teamsters union stressed that "no matter what the odds, Amazon truckers will ultimately win this fight against corporate greed."
