A container fell into the water and the container ship Amnah capsized
In the early hours of December 23, a container ship named Amnah (5,200 tons deadweight) lost stability during loading and unloading operations at the port of Ambarli in Istanbul, Turkey, and finally capsized on the side of the dock. The accident triggered emergency rescue and environmental operations, with port officials working to contain the damage and clean up the site.

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. local time on the 23rd, and video footage showed that the ship gradually tilted to the side of the dock during the loading process, and finally overturned into the water. Initial information said that there were 15 crew members on board at the time of the incident, five of whom jumped into the cold water to swim to safety, and the remaining 10 were successfully rescued by rescue teams. According to Turkish officials, one crew member suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The ship, which was built in 1996 and just completed a transfer of ownership in October, is now owned by a Belize-based company and managed by a Turkish company that flies under the Gamoro flag. Previously, the ship was owned by the Russian shipping company Fesco.

According to the preliminary investigation, the accident may have been caused by improper handling during loading, which caused the ship to lose its balance. At present, the relevant Turkish authorities have launched an investigation to find out whether there was a wrong weight distribution or improper fixing of the cargo during the loading and unloading process.

In order to prevent environmental pollution caused by fuel or cargo leakage, port staff quickly set up oil booms around the hull. No obvious signs of contamination have been found, but relevant authorities are further assessing potential risks and strengthening safety precautions.

The accident caused a degree of disruption to the operation of the port of Ambarri. As one of the busiest container ports in Turkey, the port's cargo efficiency may be affected by ship salvage and recovery efforts. Experts said that due to the unstable condition of the ship, the subsequent clean-up and salvage work may take a long time.

Amnah has undergone several changes in management and ownership in recent years, and the process of its transfer from Russian shipping company to new owner may have an impact on the maintenance and operation supervision of the ship. The accident exposed the potential risks of old ships in transition management, and also sounded the alarm for the global shipping industry.

The safety and standardization of port loading and unloading operations have once again raised concerns, especially for older ships like the Amnah that have been in operation for many years, and it is particularly important to strengthen inspections and supervision. As the investigation deepens, it is expected to reveal the specific causes of the accident and provide references for future industry improvements.

At present, the rescue and cleanup work is still intense in Ambarli port, and relevant authorities are working to minimize the impact on trade operations in Turkey, while ensuring the safety of the port and the surrounding environment.

This incident is a stark reminder that in maritime logistics, the balance between safety and efficiency is crucial, and if a mistake is made, the consequences can be catastrophic.
