Shanghai's two major auto export terminals, Haitong International Automobile Terminal in Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port District and Nangang Terminal in Shanghai Free Trade Zone, exported more than 1.66 million vehicles in 2024, up 26.6 percent year on year, according to statistics released by Shanghai Customs on Monday.

It is understood that Shanghai occupies an important position in China's automobile exports, and the automobiles exported through Shanghai port account for nearly 40% of China's total automobile exports.

Haitong International Automobile Terminal in Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Area is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It is the largest automobile ro-ro loading terminal in China and an important port for automobile enterprises in various provinces along the Yangtze River. The export volume of automobiles has exceeded one million units for three consecutive years. Chen Jia, chief of the ninth Section of the Customs Inspection Section of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Area under the Shanghai Customs Office, said that the foreign trade ro-ro shipment route of Haitong Port has covered more than 200 terminals in more than 100 countries around the world, and in 2024, a total of 798 foreign trade ro-ro ships arrived here, transporting a total of 1.298 million export vehicles.

Nangang Port in Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone is another important automobile import and export port in Shanghai after the outer port Haitong Port. At present, the ro-ro shipping line of South Port has extended to 36 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, South America and North America. In 2024, the cumulative export of vehicles from Nangang Terminal exceeded 370,000, of which new energy vehicles accounted for nearly 70%.

"We single-handedly grasp the innovation of the regulatory model, make good use of the relevant policy dividends of the Yangshan Special Comprehensive Free Trade Zone, and release the development vitality of new business forms such as automobile bonded transit; Grasp the digital transformation, make every effort to promote the construction of smart customs, explore the use of vehicle identification numbers through the whole process of customs clearance, open up customs, terminals, shipping companies and other data nodes, so as to achieve both 'manageable' and 'fast' car entry and exit."
