Return to the shipping market after 30 years with the purchase of 12 container ships
According to several foreign media reports, in response to the growth of demand in the regional container transportation market, Bangladesh Shipping Corp (BSC), the state-owned shipping company of Bangladesh, is planning to buy 12 2,500 to 3,000 TEU container ships.
"If all goes according to plan, the vessels are expected to join BSC's fleet in 2027 or 2028," BSC managing director Commodore Mahmudul Malek revealed.
The vessels are planned to operate on intra-Asian routes, and the move also marks BSC's return to the containership market after nearly 30 years away.
It is understood that the company's last foray into the bulk shipping market was in the 1990s. In 1993, BSC launched the Chittagong-Singapore feeder service with three container ships, namely "Banglar Rabi", "Banglar Moni" and "Banglar Shikha".
The shipbuilding comes after BSC recently achieved record profits. According to the company's performance report, its profit reached a record high in the fiscal year 2023-2024.
Commodore Mahmudul Malek also said that in addition to buying container ships, BSC also plans to buy bulk carriers and other types of vessels by 2030, and it is in talks with Chinese and South Korean shipyards for procurement. Currently, BSC operates only eight bulk carriers.
For Bangladesh Shipping Corp's return to the container shipping market, there are voices in the industry that this is BSC's desire to get a share of the growing regional container shipping market.
In addition, Bangladesh is revitalizing its maritime industry, with both state-owned and private shipping companies expanding their fleets. As the country's state-owned shipping company, BSC has also made full use of this opportunity to strengthen its position in the domestic shipping sector.
Syed Mohammad Arif, President of the Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association, said: "It is of Paramount importance to us to ensure that BSC's fleet expansion plan is implemented quickly and efficiently. Adding new ships will help Bangladesh earn foreign exchange, which will benefit our economy, "he said.
