MSC acquires 50% of the operation rights of the Nadorsi Mediterranean Container Terminal
This follows the recent announcement by state-owned Moroccan port operator Marsa Maroc of an agreement whereby MSC's port company Terminal Investment Ltd (TiL) has been granted a 50% concession (minus one share) in the Nadorsi Mediterranean Container Terminal.

MSC has become the latest shipping company to seek to expand capacity at its Western Mediterranean ports.

According to Alphaliner, Mediterranean Shipping will join forces with French shipping company CMA CGM to operate at the port's East container terminal "in an attempt to replicate the success of Tangier Mediterranean Shipping."

Alphaliner reported that "four container terminals are now operational at the largely developed Mediterranean port of Tangier," and that Morocco is trying to replicate the success of the port by establishing a second Western Mediterranean hub about 250 kilometers east of the port.

At Nazursi Port, Marsa Maroc has built 1.5 km of the new terminal and in October formed a 51:49 joint venture with France's CMA CGM to operate half of the terminal and equip it with eight shore Bridges and 24 electric rail gantry cranes.

"Through this new joint venture, the remaining 750 meters of the terminal will be operated by MSC, and we can expect the company to invest in similar equipment," the analyst predicted.

Once completed, Marsa Maroc's attention will shift to a possible second container terminal on the west side of the port, the company added.

"Marsa Maroc plans to launch Nador West Med's ECT in phases, with the first set of modules scheduled to be operational in 2027. The port also plans to later accommodate another, slightly smaller container terminal, tentatively called the West Container Terminal, "Alpahliner said.

The port of Nadorsi has become a focal point for Mediterranean shipping interests over the past year as it provides new capacity to the region, which has seen a surge in transshipments since the Red Sea crisis erupted, triggering a new round of port congestion in the Western Mediterranean.

Last year, at the TOC Europe conference in Rotterdam, Loadstar interviewed Hassan Abkari, Managing Director of the Tangier Mediterranean Port Authority, who stressed the urgent need for new capacity in the region.

"We have recently noticed that ships from Asia arrive with a draft of more than 17.4 meters, which means they are fully loaded - we don't expect that to happen for another 10 years... Many ships are full of containers because they haven't stopped at any port before us."
