Shanghai Port has become the world's largest vehicle throughput port
The latest data show that in the whole year of 2024, the vehicle throughput of the port of Shanghai reached 3.63 million vehicles, an annual increase of 15%, surpassing the Belgian port of Antwerp - Bruges (3.23 million vehicles) for the first time, becoming the world's first port of vehicle throughput. According to the "15th Five-Year Plan" of Shanghai Port, the overall handling capacity of more than 5 million vehicles will be deployed in Waigaoqiao, Lingang and Haitong Taicang. At present, Shanghai Port car ro-ro terminal has opened 15 international routes, exporting to 131 countries and regions around the world, more than 289 ports.
Shanghai's two major automobile export terminals, Waigaoqiao Haitong International Automobile Terminal and Lingang Nangang Terminal, achieved a record of more than 1.66 million vehicles exported in 2024, an increase of 26.6 percent year-on-year, with an average of more than 4,500 vehicles exported every day.
Haitong International Automobile Terminal in Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Area is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, which is the largest automobile ro-ro loading terminal in China. Many automobile enterprises in various provinces along the Yangtze River lock Haitong Terminal as an export terminal. For example, Anhui Chery Automobile, 95% of its exports adopted the "river-sea combined transport" mode, the car first took the Yangtze River barge from Wuhu Port down the river, arrived at Shanghai Haitong dock and then "transfer" foreign trade roller expedition overseas. Chen Jia, chief of the ninth Section of Customs Inspection in Waigaoqiao Port Area, introduced that the foreign trade ro-ro shipment route at Haitong Port has covered more than 200 terminals in more than 100 countries around the world, and the export volume of cars at Haitong Port has exceeded 1 million for three consecutive years. In the whole year of 2024, Haitong Terminal has arrived 798 foreign trade ro-ro ships, an average of 2.19 ships per day, transporting a total of 1.298 million vehicles for export.
In addition to the Haitong Terminal, the Nangang Terminal in the new area of Shanghai Lingang is a new force rising in recent years, and the current ro-ro shipping routes have extended to 36 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, South America and North America. In 2024, the cumulative export of vehicles from Nangang Terminal exceeded 370,000, of which new energy vehicles accounted for 70%.
