Trump's tariffs have sparked massive protests across the US
According to Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao" website reported on April 6, local time on April 5, the United States in Washington, D.C., and across the country held large-scale demonstrations against government spending cuts, immigration crackdown and tariff increases and other policies. With as many as 1,200 demonstrations estimated to have taken place that day, it was the largest one-day protest since President Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk made a big push to reform government and expand presidential powers, and the first major protest to hit Trump after he returned to office.

UN warns no one will win in trade war; Governor of California: California is not Washington.

Protests across the United States

In overcast weather, people braved light rain to gather on the large grassy area around the Washington Monument. Organizers told Reuters that more than 20,000 people were expected to attend the rally on the National Mall. According to the demonstration website, about 150 activist groups have signed up to participate in the 5 day protest rally, which is planned to be held in all 50 states and other countries including Canada and Mexico.

About 400 people held a demonstration about six kilometers from the Mar-a-Lago resort, where Trump lives. People driving by honked their horns in support of the demonstration, and some held signs saying, "Trump is playing golf while the market is plummeting." Americans in Europe also staged demonstrations, gathering in the streets of Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and London to show their opposition to Trump's sweeping changes to U.S. policies at home and abroad.

Mr Trump is keen to impose tariffs abroad, but there have been mass protests at home. On Saturday, local time, protests against Trump were held in more than 1,200 locations in all 50 states and Canada, Mexico and other countries, which was the largest protest since Trump took office. The demonstrators chanted "Hands Off" to express their dissatisfaction with the domestic and foreign policies of the United States implemented by Trump.

Tens of thousands of US federal workers have lost their jobs as a result of a series of initiatives led by Mr Musk's DOGE, the US Efficiency unit, which aims to streamline organisations and reduce spending. At the same time, Trump's tariff policy has led to some commodities being frantically seized, and domestic prices in the United States have risen sharply. Demonstrators are angry over the administration's moves to lay off thousands of federal workers, close Social Security Administration field offices, effectively shut down the entire agency, deport immigrants, reduce protections for transgender people and cut funding for health programs.

"Billionaires and oligarchs don't value anything but profit and power, and they certainly don't value you, your life or your community," one protester said at the event. And we see that they don't care who they have to destroy or who they have to hurt to get what they want." The protesters' comments suggest that ordinary people are frustrated with America's top management, that the U.S. government is controlled by the rich, works for the rich rather than ordinary people, and does not care about the lives of those at the bottom.

Large scale anti Trump demonstrations

In a statement, the White House said, "President Trump's position is clear: He will always protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries." Meanwhile, the Democratic position is to extend Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal immigrants, which would bankrupt those programs and crush benefits for older Americans." However, the fact that the protest took place suggests that local people do not agree with the White House.

As can be seen from the US elections, the US government is actually controlled by a combination of rich people and politicians. The US election is one of the most expensive in the world, with a record $15.9 billion spent on the 2024 US election, and ordinary people have no capital to participate, and ordinary people can only cast one vote. The accusation on the website of The People's Union USA, a grassroots organization, says a lot about the current state of the U.S. government: "Businesses, politicians, and industry in America have colluded to rig the system and build an economic system designed to exploit workers, suppress wages, and perpetuate hardship for the majority." And accused the American plutocratic elite of holding power and manipulating government for decades."

In response to the announcement of the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" policy by the United States, the spokesman of the United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, Dujarric, warned that there are no winners in a trade war. California Governor Gavin Newsom urged the California government to establish a new strategic relationship with its international trading partners, stressing that "California is not Washington."

Secretary-General of the United Nations

Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, warned on the 4th that there are no winners in a trade war, and the challenges facing vulnerable countries are more worrying.

In response to the announcement of the so-called "reciprocal tariff" policy, Dujarric said that Guterres believes that "there is no winner in the trade war", "we are now worried about those who are the most vulnerable and least able to cope with the current challenges."

Dujarric said the trade war would have a negative impact on the UN's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

On April 2 Eastern time, the United States announced the imposition of so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on all trading partners. The US action immediately drew global condemnation, and many US trading partners expressed strong dissatisfaction and clear opposition, saying that they would take countermeasures.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on the 4th directed the California government to establish a new strategic relationship with its international trading partners, stressing that "California is not Washington" and the US government's tariff policy "does not represent the will of the American people."

Newsom said in a video titled "To our global trading partners" released on the same day that the tariff measures announced by the US government do not represent the will of all the American people. In terms of total economy, California can be considered the fifth largest economy in the world. California values international trade and manufacturing, is the largest manufacturing base in the United States, and California looks forward to continuing to strengthen its relationships with its international trading partners.

Newsom stressed that both now and in the future, California is a stable international trading partner, and he hoped that economies outside the United States would take this into account and not impose retaliatory tariffs on imports from California.

The California governor's office issued a press release on the 4th, saying that California is the largest agricultural and manufacturing state in the United States, and its workers, families and farmers will be the biggest victims of the trade war. Newsom called on state agencies to build new strategic trade relationships with international partners to "increase economic resilience and protect California's manufacturers, workers, farmers, businesses and supply chains."

Newsom was quoted as saying, "Whatever the turmoil in Washington, California will remain a stable and reliable partner." California is not Washington."

California has the strongest economy in the nation, with an annual gross domestic product of $3.9 trillion, 50 percent higher than second-place Texas, the press release said. California's economy and local workers rely heavily on trade with Mexico, Canada and China. More than 40 percent of California's imports come from these countries, and up to $203 billion of the more than $491 billion in goods California imported in 2024 came from these three countries. The tariffs will also affect imports of important building materials needed to rebuild Los Angeles after the fire, including wood, steel and aluminum, as well as drywall.

The US tariff policy is bound to have a huge impact on California businesses, especially its more than 60,000 small business exporters. "Analysis by the Yale Budget Lab finds that tariffs announced by the new administration could lead to a 2.3 per cent increase in overall US inflation this year - including a 2.8 per cent increase in food prices and an 8.4 per cent increase in car prices - equivalent to $3,800 in losses for the average US household."
