Congestion at Nordic ports has intensified and shipping companies have issued warnings
Recently, Maersk has issued a reminder to its customers that as congestion at Nordic ports continues to rise, the problem of chaotic shipping schedules is likely to intensify.

Congestion at ports in Northern Europe has intensified

This Danish shipping giant specifically named the Port of Antwerp - Bruges in Belgium and the Port of Bremen in Germany, referring to them as the most severely congested areas at present.

According to statistics from the shipping data platform eeSea, 41% of the ships at the Port of Antwerp are queuing up to berth, while another 52 container ships are sailing to the port. At the Port of Bremen, 29% of the ships are waiting for berths, and another 27 ships are entering.

Logistics giant Kuehne + Nagel said that the current port operations at the Port of Antwerp are already in a state of "severe disruption". According to its report, the average waiting time for ships to berth has reached 1.81 days, and the utilization rate of the storage yard has reached as high as 96%. The refrigerated container storage yard has even exceeded full capacity, reaching 112%, resulting in delays in ship berthing. To relieve the pressure, the Port of Antwerp has had to shorten the early delivery window for export goods from 7 days to 5 days. It is worth noting that the backlog of work caused by the strike on March 31st is still escalating.

In terms of railway transportation, trains to Bremen and Wilhelmshaven are experiencing severe delays due to the sudden closure of railway lines around Hanover and a landslide near a key railway hub. The alternative route not only has a detour distance of up to 200 kilometers, but has also been operating at full capacity for a long time, forcing many trains to be suspended and directly affecting the land connection between Rotterdam and Duisburg. Meanwhile, the train turnover at the Port of Hamburg has also been exacerbated by frequent delays in terminal operations.

A spokesperson for the Port of Antwerp - Bruges said: "The current port throughput is indeed at a high level. This is partly because the new shipping alliance is undergoing handover and adjustment and it will take several weeks to stabilize." On the other hand, the expectation of the United States imposing additional import tariffs has also accelerated the concentrated shipment of export goods.

Against this backdrop, Maersk has called on shippers to pick up the unloaded goods as soon as possible and deliver the export containers as late as possible to alleviate the pressure on terminal operations and accelerate turnover efficiency.
