Trump can't hold back anymore, another shipping company chooses Chinese shipyards
Recently, Regional Container Lines (RCL), an Asian regional liner company, signed a contract with a Chinese shipyard to build two 11,000 TEU vessels and two 4,400 TEU vessels.
However, Honghai Container Transport did not disclose the information of the shipyard, merely stating that it has signed a contract with a "trusted and well-known shipyard".
It is understood that the 11,000 TEU vessels ordered by Honghai Container Transport this time cost 125 million US dollars per vessel and are expected to be delivered in 2027. The cost of the 4,400 TEU vessel is 59.7 million US dollars per vessel and it is expected to be delivered in 2028. The total transaction value of these four new ships is 369.4 million US dollars.
Regarding this new shipbuilding, Honghai Container Transport stated that the new shipbuilding is in line with the company's strategy of increasing capacity, expanding into new markets, and strengthening its existing network. It further stated: "This move will not only enhance the operational efficiency of Honghai Container Transport, but also provide support for the long-term charter market. It is expected that the demand for charter will remain at a high level."
It is worth noting that in 2024, Honghai Container Transport placed an order with China's Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard at a price of 56.6 million US dollars per vessel for six 4,300 TEU vessels, with a total value of 339.6 million US dollars, which are scheduled to be delivered in 2027.
Since March 2025, the global new shipbuilding market has remained sluggish.
However, apart from Honghai Container Lines, recently, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which ranks first in the world in terms of container ship capacity, has also signed a contract with Chinese shipyards to order six 22,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, reflecting that liner companies still have a high level of trust in Chinese shipyards.
