DNV Classification Society has established the China Container Ship Service Center in Shanghai
On April 29th, DNV Classification Society announced the establishment of the "DNV China Container Ship Service Center ". The center is located at DNV's Greater China headquarters and aims to enhance DNV's support for shipowners in China who undertake global container ship orders, and to assist Chinese shipyards in addressing the complex challenges of transforming towards more sustainable, efficient and technologically advanced shipbuilding and operations.

At present, Chinese shipyards are leading the global new container ship market. In the coming years, more than 70% of the world's new container ship orders will be contracted by Chinese shipyards, including a sharp increase in orders for ultra-large container ships that use alternative fuels, dual-fuel, and have a container capacity of over 24,000 TEUs. Although container ships do not have the largest number of orders, recent reports this year show that the total value of their orders is close to 50 billion US dollars - far exceeding that of any other type of ship.

Norbert Kray

Norbert Kray, senior vice president of DNV Group and general Manager of Greater China Region, said: "The establishment of this center demonstrates DNV's commitment to promoting maritime transformation." The container shipping industry is experiencing an unprecedentedly exciting moment, and we are witnessing the future of the industry with our own eyes. China is the core region of global container shipbuilding. We are committed to enabling local shipyards to share top industry resources with global customers. DNV builds not only a service center, but also a collaborative platform that brings together shipowners, shipyards, industry stakeholders and DNV's global experts to jointly develop solutions, ensuring that the shipping industry remains at the core of global trade today and in the future.

This center integrates DNV's global network, professional technology, local insights and local expert teams, focusing on the four core pillars of the future of container shipping, and providing customers with collaborative innovation and standardized solutions:

Excellence New Shipbuilding: Provides classification approval, risk assessment and quality assurance for Very large container ships (ULCV), alternative fuel and dual-fuel vessels.

Decarbonization and alternative fuels: covering LNG, methanol, ammonia fuel and hydrogen fuel ship design, fuel transition strategy and emission compliance consulting.

Digitalization: Offering intelligent ship solutions, including AI-driven energy efficiency optimization, cybersecurity, and digital twin technologies.

Energy efficiency management: Assist in the implementation of advanced hull design, propulsion systems and energy-saving devices to meet EEXI/CII requirements.

Øyvind Pettersen, vice president of DNV Group and general manager of the China Technology Center, added: "Chinese shipyards are at the forefront of container ship construction technology." Customer demands have run through the entire chain from design to operation, covering new fuels, advanced systems and digital integration. The newly established service center precisely meets these demands, providing a localized single connection window for shipyards and shipowners, and sharing DNV's leading global technical resources in the container ship field.
