A container ship collided with a Hong Kong bulk carrier at the Ho Chi Minh Port
On April 25th, the container ship "KMTC Surabaya" flying the Panamanian flag collided with the bulk carrier "Glengyle" flying the Hong Kong flag near the Dragon Head River in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, causing a major maritime accident. Preliminary reports indicate that the accident did not cause any casualties or damage to goods.
It is understood that the 2,806 TEU "KMTC Surabaya" was built in 2018 and was long-term leased by KMTC Line from the Japanese shipping capacity provider Nissin Shipping. It collided with a handy bulk carrier "Glengyle "built in 2015 under Hong Kong Uni-Asia Holdings.
At the time of the accident, both the KMTC Surabaya and Glengye were sailing on the Long Tauri River in Can Tho District. The KMTC Surabaya, which was responsible for the routes connecting the Pearl River Delta with South Korea and Southeast Asia, was sailing to Hong Kong at the time of the accident.
The Glengyle is sailing from Phu My to Ho Chi Minh City.
It is claimed that the bow of the KMTC Surabaya hit the starboard side of the bulk carrier Glengale, tearing apart the outer hull of the bulk carrier and causing severe water ingest in the cargo holds and engine rooms. As a result, the Glengale sank from the stern section, causing crude oil to spill into the river.
To address this situation, the Ho Chi Minh City Maritime Port Authority is coordinating with the Vietnam Maritime Administration and is currently directing traffic on the Saigon-Vung Tau sea channel. The authorities have issued a warning, advising against approaching the affected areas. In addition, a maritime notice was issued to restrict traffic in the area around the damaged vessel.
The clean-up and control work is underway. Teams from the Municipal Maritime Port Authority, SOS Oil Emergency Center and other institutions are working together to control the oil spill.
Rescue vessels are currently separating the two ships and deploying equipment to control the oil spill.
