The Maersk Frankfurt fire is under control
On July 20, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) informed that the fire on board the Maersk-operated container ship Maersk Frankfurt had been going on for two days. Although the fire was contained in parts of the ship, it reignited in other undamaged areas.

In response to the emergency, ICG has released new video footage of the 5920 TEU ship, which was delivered from a Japanese shipyard just last month. The video showed that although smoke had been billowing in the container area, the flames were visible compared to Friday, but the smoke still indicated that the fire had not been completely lifted.

In order to speed up the fire fighting process and ensure the safety of the crew and the ship, ICG announced that it has deployed additional helicopters to join the fire fighting operation, including an advanced light helicopter to drop a total of 150 kilograms of dry chemical powder to the fire source area, to control the further spread of the fire.

On Saturday morning, the ICG reported that it had encountered challenges in containing the fire: "Although the fire in the bow of the ship has been effectively contained and extinguished, it has reignited in the midship."

Since Friday, three Indian Coast Guard vessels - Sachet, Sujeet and Samrat - have been engaged in fire-fighting operations.

In addition, the pollution control vessel Samudra Prahari was also dispatched to the site on Saturday to deal with possible environmental pollution problems.

Two aircraft have conducted a detailed assessment of the vessel and the ICG has confirmed that a crew evacuation plan is not necessary under current circumstances. "ICG will continue to do all it can to ensure the safety of its personnel and to mitigate the potential environmental impact of this incident," the agency reiterated.

According to Equasis data, Maersk Frankfurt, which is operated by Maersk on a charter basis, is owned by Japanese ship Dongdongqing Shipping and managed by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement's Hong Kong subsidiary. The Panamanian-flagged vessel is classified by Japan's ClassNK classification society and underwritten by the British P&I Society.
