Global Ports: Total container throughput increased 14.6% year over year
Global Ports, the number one container terminal operator in the Russian market, announced its second quarter and first half operating results on July 18.
In the second quarter of 2024, the Russian sea container market continued its rapid recovery. Total container throughput at Russian Marine terminals increased by 11.8% year-on-year and 3.4% quarter-on-quarter to 1,338,000 TEU. In the first half of 2024, total container throughput increased by 14.6% year-on-year to 2,631,000 TEU, reaching a record level in 2021.
The Baltic basin has significantly outperformed the market. In the second quarter of 2024, container throughput in northwestern Russia increased by 33.0% year-on-year and in the first half of 2024 by 58.2% year-on-year.
The Baltic basin's share of the overall Russian market increased from 23% a year ago to 32% in the first half of 2024.
Container throughput growth at sea terminals in southern Russia (Azov - Black Sea and Caspian Sea basins) was slower than the market, growing by 5.6% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024 and 6.2% year-on-year in the first half of 2024.
Container throughput in the Far East Basin has remained largely unchanged and is approaching the high levels of 2022-2023. In the first half of 2024, the Far East Basin's share of the overall Russian market was 44%, compared to 51% in the same period last year.
Consolidated container throughput at the Holding company's Marine terminal increased to 271,000 TEUs in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 30.5% year-on-year. In the first half of 2024, the ocean terminal throughput of global ports was 568,000 TEUs, an increase of 44.2% over the same period last year.
Since the beginning of 2024, the growth rate of consolidated container throughput at global ports has exceeded the market growth rate due to the favorable location of terminals in the Baltic Sea basin. In the second quarter of 2024, container throughput at the company's Marine terminals in the Baltic Sea region increased to 167,000 TEU, an increase of 2.8 times year-on-year, which is the highest container throughput in the past nine quarters. Key factors for Global Ports' terminal throughput growth in the Baltic Sea region are import supply and coastal transport.
Global Ports management said: "The demand for sea container logistics in north-west Russia is recovering strongly. We are ready and we have seen record container volumes at our terminals in the Baltic basin over the past two years."
Global Ports is the number one container terminal operator in the Russian market. The group owns and operates a unique network of 7 sea containers and multi-purpose terminals at two major sea container portals. The main business of the group is container handling.
