The CMA CGM container ship MV Groton was hit by a missile
On August 4, Yahya Sarrea, a spokesman for the Houthi armed forces in Yemen, issued a statement saying that the Houthis attacked a container ship named "MV Groton" with several missiles in the Gulf of Aden. The attack marked the first time the Houthis have publicly claimed responsibility for such an operation since Israel carried out retaliatory air strikes against them in the port of Hodeidah on July 20.

The United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) and British maritime security company Ambrey both confirmed that a merchant ship was hit by a missile about 125 nautical miles east of the Yemeni port of Aden, but fortunately there was no fire, water or oil spill and the ship sailed safely to the next port. It is worth noting that initial reports indicated that the ship may have encountered unidentified explosives and started a fire, but subsequent information corrected this.

GROTON(IMO: 9246310) is a Liberian-flagged container ship built in 2002 with a capacity of 2,500 TEU. The vessel is operated under the charter of CMA CGM SA The French Line. The owner is Conbulk Shipmanagement Corp of Greece.

In addition, Yahya Sarrea also said in the statement that the group shot down a US MQ-9 "Reaper" drone again in Yemen's northern Saada province.

The UK Maritime Trade Action Office (UKMTO) and British maritime security company Ambrey both stressed that no one was injured in the attack and all crew members were safe and well. The UKMTO further stated that the vessel was the MV GROTON mentioned in previous reports, and that the location of the incident was about 170 nautical miles east of Aden.

Ambrey's assessment report indicates that the ship was targeted earlier in the day and experienced the threat of a close range explosion.
In a separate development, US Central Command announced earlier on Saturday that it had destroyed a Houthi missile and its launcher inside Yemen in response to Houthi activity.

This series of actions by the Houthis triggered retaliatory military strikes by the United States and Britain. Several shipping companies have chosen to divert their vessels from the Red Sea and Suez Canal routes to the southern tip of Africa to avoid risk areas, which has undoubtedly increased shipping costs and time.

Since November, the Houthis have launched a series of attacks on international ships around Yemen in solidarity with the Palestinians during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Earlier, the Houthis said that they would carry out the fourth phase of armed escalation measures against Israel and its US-led Western Allies, and that the Houthis would attack relevant ships in the Mediterranean area that their weapons "can cover"; To strike all ships supporting Israel and transporting supplies to occupied Palestinian ports.

In the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean, the Houthis have expanded their strikes against all ships of companies that have done business with Israel in the past few months, regardless of their nationality or the port of destination.

After a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out in October last year, the Houthis used drones and missiles to attack targets in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, demanding that Israel stop its military operations in the Palestinian Gaza Strip. Since January 12 this year, the United States and the United Kingdom have repeatedly launched air strikes against Houthi targets, causing casualties. Some countries have condemned the US and UK actions as a violation of Yemen's sovereignty and an escalation of regional tensions.
