Maersk announced the latest fleet renewal plan, will add 60 new capacity
On August 7, Maersk announced the latest fleet renewal plan on its official website, including the signing of dual-fuel new building orders and charter contracts, in order to renew the capacity of about 160,000 TEU per year as planned.
Maersk launched the capacity renewal plan in 2021, and the updated capacity announced this time is 50 to 60 vessels, totaling about 800,000 TEU, of which about 300,000 TEU is its own capacity, and the remaining 500,000 TEU is obtained by chartering vessels.
Maersk stressed that all ships on order will be dual-fuel so that they can sail on low-emission fuels in the future. Once these new capacities are delivered, about 25 percent of Maersk's fleet will be equipped with dual-fuel engines.
It is worth noting that in order to maintain the long-term competitive advantage of the fleet and achieve the goal of decarbonization, Maersk has chosen two green fuels, methanol and liquified gas.
Previously, Maersk has announced an order for 25 methanol-powered dual-fuel vessels, five of which are already in operation and the remaining 20 under construction. According to the latest plan, Maersk has started to lock in the purchase and sale agreement of liquefied biomethane (biLNG) to ensure that the new dual-fuel vessels can contribute to the emission reduction by 2030.
Maersk explained that while green methanol may be the most competitive and mass-produced green fuel in the short term, Maersk also believes that the industry will be multi-fuel in the future, including liquefied biomethane.
Rabab Boulos, Chief Operating Officer of Maersk, said: "Our fleet renewal programme is essential to maintaining the competitive edge of our maritime business and is a cornerstone of our carbon-reducing operations. Due to the surge in orders from shipyards and the lengthening of ship delivery times, we have decided to renew our capacity through a combination of ordering and leasing to ensure we have sufficient capacity for 2026-2030 and to build a competitive advantage."
Ahmed Hassan, Head of Asset Strategy and Strategic Partnerships at Maersk, further said: "Maersk's total capacity will not increase, and the new capacity will gradually replace the old capacity, ensuring that our fleet size remains around 4.3 million TEU. By diversifying our fleet and diversifying our fuel options, we gain greater flexibility and more knowledge and experience to prepare for a multi-fuel future. Thank you to our partners for working with us to drive industry decarbonisation."
According to Alphaliner's latest statistics, as of August 8, 2024, Maersk had an operating capacity of 713 vessels of 4.36 million TEU, of which 332 owned vessels of 2.53 million TEU, 381 leased vessels of 1.83 million TEU, and 29 custom-built vessels of 370,000 TEU.
