The container ship CMA CGM Balboa lost control and crashed into the dock
At 00:40 local time on October 2, the small container ship CMA CGM Balboa, flying the Maltese flag, collided with a pier in the Colombian port of Barranquilla.

The collision was reportedly caused by a mechanical failure that caused the ship to drift and eventually collide with port infrastructure.

The CMA CGM Balboa is a 22,914 gross tonnage container ship, built in 2007 and registered in Malta. The container ship was carrying 2,700 tons of cargo at the time of the collision. When entering the channel, the main engine suddenly mechanical failure, causing it to lose control and began to drift. Finally, 10 kilometers from the shipping lane, the ship hit the small container terminal of the port of Barranquilla.

After the accident, the local maritime bureau immediately launched emergency procedures, and a rapid response team consisting of four tugboats was quickly dispatched to the scene to assist. The tugboat company, the Colombian Maritime Authority and the local harbour master worked together to successfully move the vessel to a safe berth at 11:00 a.m. on the same day.

No contamination or crew injuries were reported, but the container ship reportedly suffered damage, with its hull and ballast tanks punctured. The extent of the damage to the vessel is still being assessed, depending on whether the vessel goes into dry dock or heads to the next port for repairs.
