Zuckerberg is officially entering the green shipping space
On November 26, Danish shipping company Norden announced that it has signed a sustainable Marine fuel agreement with Meta (formerly Facebook), the tech giant founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a milestone in the process of decarbonizing the maritime industry.

Norden is a Danish operator of dry bulk and refined oil tankers, a global provider of maritime services, founded in 1871 and one of Denmark's oldest international shipping companies. Norden offers ocean freight services for bulk and project cargoes of all sizes, combining freight solutions with port logistics to help customers optimize and reduce the carbon emissions of their supply chains. The company provides customers with flexibility, reliability and intelligence.

Anne Jensen, Chief Operating Officer of Norden, said: "We are extremely honoured to be partnering with the company founded by Mr Zuckerberg to add Meta to our growing group of customers who are committed to decarbonising the offshore supply chain. Both Meta and Norden are committed to high standards and the further development of the decarbonization of seaborne cargo, as is evident from our participation in the Book&Claim Community Council."

Norden's emissions reduction solutions provide a pathway to decarbonizing seaborne cargo in an environment with limited biofuel supplies. Norden follows an emissions reduction solution called "Book&Claim", which works by burning biofuels on Norden-operated vessels and distributing emissions reductions to third-party customers such as Meta through a ledger and chain of claims custody system.

This process is based on the logistics emissions accounting and reporting of the Intelligent Freight Hub, as well as the voluntary market-based measurement framework, ensuring that the environmental benefits of biofuels are transferred to customers in a highly transparent and reliable manner. The ISC-certified biofuels used by Norden have an 80-90% life-cycle emission reduction potential and are a direct alternative to existing vessels. These reductions are certified by independent verifier Normec Verifavia and traded in an external registry through 123Carbon.

Anne Jensen further added: "The Book&Claim solution enables global maritime customers to enjoy the emission reduction benefits of biofuels, even if it is not physically possible to add biofuels on a particular trade route or voyage." The solution has been developed to provide Norden's and other industry customers who rely on maritime transport and seek to decarbonise their supply chains with a reliable investment route.

Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Emissions Strategy at Meta, said: "Meta's goal is to achieve net zero emissions across the value chain by 2030. To achieve this, we are working to address emissions sources throughout the supply chain, including upstream emissions associated with the maritime transport of supply chain goods such as computer equipment and construction materials. The innovative solutions Norden offers are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonize their value chain at the pace and scale needed to meet their emission reduction targets."
