Maersk Saratoga was attacked again by the Houthis
A US-flagged Maersk Line ship, the Maersk Saratoga, was attacked by the Houthis again in recent days. The 2,500-TEU container ship, built in 2004, was attacked in Djibouti as it was being escorted away by U.S. warships, the second such incident in the region in 10 days.

Houthis claim to target 'American ships'

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the targets included two U.S. destroyers and three U.S. supply ships. The vessels are the Maersk Saratoga, the product tanker Stena Impeccable and the bulk carrier Liberty Grace, according to ship tracking data from S&P Global. Maersk Saratoga's routes mainly operate between Djibouti and the port of Salara, Oman.

The American convoy successfully foiled the attack

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Dec. 10 that U.S. destroyers USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS O 'Kane (DDG 77) successfully repelled multiple Houthis attacks while escorting three U.S.-flagged commercial vessels through the Gulf of Aden between Dec. 9 and 10. Including attacks by drones and anti-ship cruise missiles.

"No one was injured and no damage was caused to commercial vessels, civilians or U.S. military vessels," CENTCOM said. U.S. forces were able to secure the vessel and its personnel, while protecting other civilian vessels and their crews."

Maersk Saratoga

This is the Houthis' second recent attack on Maersk Saratoga and the fifth time this year that the Houthis have attacked a Maersk ship. In July, Maersk Sentosa dodged a missile fired by the Houthis; Maersk Yorktown was attacked twice in April, but neither was damaged or killed.

The incident once again highlights the tense security situation in the Gulf of Aden region.
