Trump's tariffs are causing Asian countries to rush shipping containers into the United States
U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated tariff threats have caused Asian countries to jam up containers in the United States. According to data from the Japan Maritime Center, last year, container exports from 18 Asian countries or regions to the United States surged to 21.45 million TEU (in 20-foot container), a record high, driven by the Red Sea crisis, the threat of strikes in the United States, and the impact of the United States to impose tariffs.

According to US statistics, imports from Asia grew by about 13% in January this year, industry analysis, in addition to the lunar year to rush goods, Trump upgraded the expected psychology of the tariff war, pushing up the rush tide. Trump is expected to announce reciprocal tariffs on several countries this week, and the U.S. retail industry expects imports to increase in the coming months. According to the latest forecast of the National Retail Federation (NRF) on August 8, the import volume of the United States increased 0.2 percent in February, 11.1 percent in March, 8.2 percent in April, 5.4 percent in May, and 0.6 percent in June.

The industry said that based on the concern about a new wave of tax increases, importers are concerned about whether they ship in advance or do not mess up in a crisis.

At present, there are nearly 20 airlines operating in the United States, according to industry data, the top five airlines in terms of cargo volume last year are CMA, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), ONE, Maersk, Evergreen, the total annual cargo volume is more than 2 million TEU, including about 60% of the cargo volume, Yangming cargo volume of more than 850,000 TEU, Wan Hai more than 520,000 TEU, separated in the 11th and 12th. In terms of the growth rate of cargo volume, compared with 2019, Wanhai doubled the growth rate of the highest, followed by Matson's more than doubled growth, Star growth of 97%, MSC growth of 77%.

The industry said that the threat of Trump 2.0 tariffs is constant, often announced that the country that imposes tariffs will take effect, and the policy is uncertain, and the sudden extension of tariffs on Mexico and Canada have made importers and airlines face great uncertainty. The more diversified the supply chain layout of manufacturers, the more flexible to respond to, shipping operators need to constantly review the changes in individual market demand, adjust routes and ship layout.
