MSC became the first liner company to exceed 6 million TEU in capacity
According to the latest data released by Alphaliner, as of July 22, the total operating capacity of Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) exceeded 6 million TEU to 6,012,214TEU, with a total of 844 vessels in operation, accounting for 20.0% of the global capacity share. Among them, there are 546 owned vessels of 3,041,910TEU, 298 chartered vessels of 2,970,304TEU, and 100 ordered vessels of 1,206,754TEU.
As a result, MSC became the first liner company to exceed 6 million TEU in capacity. Previously, the industry has said that if MSC's operating capacity exceeds 6 million TEU, it will achieve "a capacity to match an alliance", and now it is true.
At the beginning of 2024, Maersk announced that after the 2M alliance cooperation expires in January 2025, it will carry out a long-term operational collaboration program called "Gemini" with Hapag-Lloyd. That would mean a major shift in the alliance landscape.
Among them, MSC became a single carrier, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd formed THE "Twin Star" alliance, THE members of the ocean alliance remained unchanged, still are CMA CGM Group, COSCO Shipping consolidation + Orient Overseas, Evergreen Shipping, the alliance after Hapag-Lloyd left, only Ocean Network shipping (ONE), HMM and Yangming Shipping.
According to Alphaliner's statistics, THE Ocean Alliance currently operates a total capacity of 8,689,203TEU, the Gemini Alliance 6,518,160TEU and The Alliance 3,448,653TEU.
THE capacity of MSC is much higher than that of the Alliance, and it is not far from the "Gemini" alliance. Crucially, MSC's capacity continues to grow and it now holds the world's largest order capacity of 1,206,754TEU.
Some analysts predict that after the cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd in February 2025, MSC's fleet size is expected to reach 7.17 million TEU, slightly higher than Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd's combined 7.08 million TEU.
