A fire on the inaugural flight of the Maersk Frankfurt killed one person
On July 19, a sailor died in the fire on the newly built container ship Maersk Frankfurt, and firefighters were still battling the blaze three days later.

The ship, which was leased to Maersk Line by Japan's Imaji Shipbuilding Company, was delivered to Japan's Tohigashi Marine in May this year and made its maiden voyage under Bernhard Schulte's management.

Manoj Bhatia, deputy director general of the Indian Coast Guard in Goa, told TOI this morning: "Fire suppression operations are still ongoing... We have the fire under control but because of the container, based on previous experience, it will take three to four days to fully extinguish the fire."

Fire in Maersk Frankfurt

The Maersk Frankfurt, manned by a crew of 21, was sailing from Mundra to Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it sent a distress signal in the Arabian Sea, 50 nautical miles off Karwar, India.

The Maersk Frankfurt is assigned to Maersk's Far East - Indian Subcontinent service, of which the Ocean Network Express (ONE) is a co-loader. EconDB shows that just two days before the fire, the Maersk Frankfurt departed from the Indian port of Mundra for Colombo, where it was expected to arrive on July 21.

A spokesman for Maersk said: "It is with deep regret that the ship manager has confirmed the death of a crew member following the fire incident." The rest of the crew are safe. The owner and ship management are in contact with the crew and ensuring all possible support is provided to them."
