Maersk Frankfurt owners declare general average
The 5920TEU container ship Maersk Frankfurt, operated by Maersk, has been on fire for several days since July 19, resulting in the death of one crew member. It is reported that the ship is a Maersk chartered vessel and the owner has declared general average (GA).

Fire in Maersk Frankfurt

According to reports, in June this year, the "Maersk Frankfurt" ship has just been delivered from the shipyard to Japanese shipowner Tokei Kaiun, after which it was leased to Maersk for a three-year lease period, deployed to operate on the Far East-Indian subcontinent route.

At the time of the accident, the ship was in the Arabian Sea area near the west coast of India and was en route from Mundra, India, to Colombo, Sri Lanka, where it was scheduled to arrive on July 21. The trajectory chart shows that the ship had previously called at Chinese ports such as Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao and Ningbo.

After receiving a distress call from the vessel, the Indian Coast Guard sent rescue helicopters and rescue boats to participate in the rescue. Indian officials said the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.

A spokesman for Maersk told the media that the death of the crew is deeply saddened, the other crew members are safe, the "Maersk Frankfurt" ship is stable, all machinery, navigation and other equipment are operating normally.

"General Average has now been declared and once the containers on board have been discharged at a safe location, the cargo can only be delivered after the necessary arrangements have been made by the general average adjuster, and it is not possible to determine the extent to which the fire has affected the cargo," the report added.

Maersk official shipping schedule

According to the latest shipping schedule on Maersk's website, the Maersk Frankfurt is scheduled to arrive in Colombo on July 30, Port Klang on August 4, Singapore on August 8, and Qingdao, Shanghai and Ningbo on August 15, 19 and 21 respectively.

In addition, the shipping claims consulting company W K Webster also said on the official website that the owner of the "Maersk Frankfurt" vessel has declared general average, so before the delivery of the goods, all cargo interests need to bear general average. The company also said it would inspect any damaged goods as needed and investigate the cause of the fire.

Since the ship is carrying Chinese export goods, the cargo owner and freight forwarding enterprises need to contact the shipping company in time to understand the affected situation of the goods in order to arrange subsequent transportation plans.
