With more than 400 ships, MSC has increased its investment in buying used vessels
According to the latest news provided by Alphaliner for Sindh Maritime Network, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has recently acquired a container ship named "NORTHERN JAGUAR" for $52.5 million.

This also means that the number of used container ships acquired by MSC since August 2020 has reached a staggering 400!

The total number of used vessels purchased by MSC exceeded 400

Alphaliner said the 8,814 TEU container ship is an important step in MSC's continued expansion of its fleet. This marks the fifth ship of the "NORTHERN J" series that MSC has acquired from an interested party of V Ships Hamburg, Germany. Previous acquisitions include NORTHERN JULIE, NORTHERN JADE, NORTHERN JASPER and NORTHERN JUSTICE.

The ship was built by South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in 2009 and was originally owned by German shipowner NVA. The details of the ship are as follows: Deadweight tonnage (DWT) : 108,730 tons, length: 332.40 meters, width: 43.20 meters, refrigerated plug: 700.

The vessel is currently under lease to Maersk, with the lease expected to end in June 2026. It is unclear whether MSC will take delivery of the vessel before the lease expires. After the completion of the transaction, V Ships Hamburg will continue to own four ships in the NORTHERN J series, They are "NORTHERN JAMBOREE", "NORTHERN JAVELIN", "NORTHERN JUBILEE" and "NORTHERN JUVENILE". These vessels may also join MSC's fleet in the future.

400 ships! Historic milestone in MSC used boat purchase

In addition to the NORTHERN JAGUAR, MSC has acquired the following vessels in the last month or so:

HONGKONG BRIDGE (4,252 TEU)
BF TIGER (2,826 TEU)
"NAJADE" (2,702 TEU)
"HANNAH", "LUCIE" and "MARGARETE SCHULTE" (2,572 TEU each)
"LUDWIG SCHULTE" (1,740 TEU)

Alphaliner said the recent acquisitions are part of MSC's unprecedented second-hand vessel acquisition program, which has accumulated 400 vessels since August 2020.

To date, MSC has acquired a total capacity of 1.66 million TEU of used vessels with an average age of 20 years and container capacity ranging from 624 TEU to 14,700 TEU. Much of MSC's expansion in the secondary market has come from non-operating shipowners (NOOs) vessels.

Critical time node for MSC expansion

MSC's acquisition program is growing rapidly, and from August 2020 onwards, the company's second-hand vessel acquisition timeline is as follows:

August 2021: Completion of the acquisition of 100 vessels
June 2022: Completion of acquisition of 200 vessels
December 2022: Cumulative acquired capacity of 1 million TEU completed
April 2023: Completion of the acquisition of 300 vessels
November 2024: Completion of acquisition of 400 vessels

Alphaliner also said that while second-hand ship prices continue to rise, MSC is still actively expanding its fleet and expects the current record to be broken again soon.

Impact on the industry

MSC's rapid expansion has further consolidated its dominant position in the global container shipping market. MSC, which is about to break up with Maersk and fly solo, has been outstanding in improving its market adaptability and enhancing its resilience to risks through the acquisition of various types of vessels. This expansion strategy, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrates MSC's ability to seize market opportunities and pursue long-term growth.

As MSC's acquisition spree continues, industry insiders will be watching closely to see how this strategy affects fleet structure, market dynamics and competitors' strategies. The acquisition of the NORTHERN JAGUAR is yet another testament to MSC's ambition and its determination to shape the future of global shipping.
