On the 29th local time, the Peruvian coast was hit by waves as high as 4 meters, damaging boats and shops. Peruvian officials say three-quarters of the country's ports are closed.
One person was reported to have been killed in Ecuador as waves inundated piers and public squares, forcing residents to flee to higher ground.
The Peruvian Navy said: "These waves are caused by persistent winds on the sea and are coming towards our coastal areas." These waves were generated thousands of kilometers away from Peru, off the coast of the United States."
Dozens of fishing boats were damaged and those that survived are still unable to operate in dangerous conditions. The city of Callao, close to the capital Lima and home to Peru's main port, has closed several beaches and banned tourist and fishing boats from the sea.
Peru's National Emergency Operations Center posted on social media that it has closed 91 of its 121 ports until January 1.
