CMA CGM has ordered 12 dual-fuel container ships from HD

French container shipping giant CMA CGM has placed an order for 12 15,500TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships with South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The two sides signed a Letter of intent (LoI) worth approximately 3.9 trillion won (about $2.7 billion), marking HD Hyundai Heavy's successful first order in 2025, with an estimated cost of more than $220 million per container ship.

This order further reflects CMA CGM's aggressive expansion in the global shipping market. The company is rapidly closing in on Maersk and is on track to overtake the Danish shipping giant in terms of capacity by the end of the year. Cma CGM currently operates a fleet with a total capacity of 3.86 million TEU, while Maersk has a capacity of 4.47 million TEU.

Although CMA CGM currently has a stronger order book than Maersk, this advantage is not enough to immediately close the capacity gap between the two. How the competition between the two shipping giants will evolve in 2025 has undoubtedly become the focus of attention in the industry.
