The Greek Dry bulk shipping company was established
Greek ship management company Armi Shipmanagement has been established to focus on dry bulk carriers.
Armi Shipmanagement CEO Yiannis Kourkoulis revealed that the company will initially manage the commercial operations of two Capesize bulk carriers, and plans to venture into ship ownership beyond the management business. He expects the company to further expand its fleet over the next year as the value of its bulk carrier assets continues to fall.
While Armi Shipmanagement's starting point is the dry bulk market, the company is also targeting the liquid market, where Yiannis Kourkoulis is confident of the opportunities.
Notably, Yiannis Kourkoulis also serves as Vice President of the ship recycling company Best Oasis and is a board member of the Hellenic Shipbrokers Association.
Bulk carrier prices have continued to fall since mid-2024, and weak freight rates in the fourth quarter of last year further exacerbated the market downturn. In January 2025, the market faced more challenges, but gradually stabilized after the Chinese New Year. Of the three major shipping sectors, dry bulk currently offers the most attractive investment opportunities due to valuation advantages, attracting established players in the industry and new entrants from other sectors looking to reinvest profits accumulated in the recent market rally, market sources said.
As one of the world's leading shipping centers, Greece continues to attract new ship management companies, with government data showing a 7 percent increase in the number of new ship management companies established in the country since 2013. Earlier this year, DS Norden opened an office in Athens, headed by George Daskalakis, to focus on procuring vessels from Greek shipowners, mainly for charter purposes of six months to two years.
Similarly, last month Fleet Management expanded its operations to Greece with the establishment of a Ship Management centre covering technical management, crew management, safety and quality assurance under Yiannis Maroulis. In 2024, CBRC entered the Greek market through the acquisition of Euronav's Ship Management subsidiary, Euronav Ship Management Hellas. In addition, in 2023, Japanese shipping giant NYK Line opened an office in Greece, headed by the group's European representative NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) NV, with the aim of strengthening its bulk carrier chartering business.
