According to Lloyd's List, a container ship operated by MSC, the world's largest container shipping company from Switzerland, crossed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait for the first time in 18 months.
According to the vessel tracking and monitoring of Lloyd's intelligence platform Seasearcher, this 6,700 TEU MSC Antonia completed this historic voyage.
MSC Antonia ran aground while passing through Saudi Arabia in May this year. At that time, a report by Lloyd's List Intelligence showed that there was evidence suggesting that the vessel was a victim of global navigation satellite system interference. The analysis highlighted the deception mode. This led to the vessel running aground near Eliza Shoals, west of Jeddah. Since MSC Antonia ran aground, its AIS data has been affected by GNSS interference. But data from June 19th showed that the ship left Jeddah.
On June 16th, satellite images reviewed by Lloyd's List showed that a container ship of the same size as MSC Antonia was still moored in Jeddah, consistent with AIS data.
AIS broadcasts have intervals from June 20th to June 21st and again from June 21st to June 26th. MSC Antonia reappeared sailing eastward in the Indian Ocean. This indicates that MSC Antonia crossed the Mande Strait during the intermission of AIS transmission.
MSC Antonia is now passing through the Singapore Strait, indicating its destination as Shanghai, China.
According to Lloyd's Intelligence vessel tracking data, this is the first time that a vessel operated by MSC has crossed the border since December 2023.
The most likely scenario is that the ship will either go to Shanghai for minor repairs or be returned empty. The MSC website shows that there is no fixed schedule The vessel tracking data shows a speed of approximately 18 knots, indicating that the previous accident did not cause significant damage to the vessel.
