Affected by the Red Sea crisis, ships sailing between Asia and Europe have to detour through the Cape of Good Hope, which directly leads to serious shipping delays in many ports around the world, especially in Asian ports.

Since the beginning of 2024, due to a large number of container ships docking at the Port of Singapore did not berthing on time, resulting in ships concentrating at the port in a certain period of time, berths are extremely tight, and waiting time has increased significantly. Earlier, analysts said the waiting time for ships could be up to seven days.

Port congestion

PSA Chief Executive Officer Ong Kim Pong said that due to the Red Sea crisis, about 90 per cent of container ships did not arrive at the port of Singapore on schedule this year, which is significantly higher than the average of 77 per cent last year. In addition, the length of port stays of ships also increased by 22% year-on-year.

He further analyzed that the Red Sea crisis has severely disrupted global trade and shipping markets, and it is expected that the challenges brought by this will last for a long time. "PSA is currently actively working in partnership with stakeholders on a number of initiatives to better coordinate upstream and downstream ports, improve ship punctuality and overall network efficiency."

In addition to reactivating some berths and storage yards at Keppel Terminal, PSA's Tuas Port will add two more berths to its current nine by the end of 2024. PSA also plans to recruit front-line workers at all terminals. Since 2024, PSA has recruited nearly 1,500 front-line workers to enhance terminal operations.

It is reported that the growth of the Singapore port is due to the Singapore government's investment in port infrastructure. In recent years, the Singapore government has increased its investment in port infrastructure to improve the operational efficiency and capacity of the port. Singapore's Port Corporation (PSA) has revealed that two new berths will be opened in Tuas Port this year, and PSA plans to further expand Tuas Port in the future.
