Terminal Operations Giant (PSA) acquires 85% stake in Polish multimodal transport operator
PSA International (PSA), the global terminal operator, recently announced that it will acquire 85% of Loconi International, Poland's top multimodal transport operator, further consolidating its strategic presence in the European market.
The seller of the deal is ATC Cargo, a listed Polish freight forwarder. PSA's move is intended not only to strengthen its rail offerings in its European container hubs, but also to provide customers with more options to move from road to rail in order to drive a more sustainable transport model. The deal is still awaiting regulatory approval.
Founded in 2011, Loconi International operates 220 trains per month covering five corridors in Poland and handles around 250,000 TEUs per year. The corridors connect the ports of Gdansk and Gdynia in northern Poland with two independently operated railway hubs in Warsaw and Radomsko, while also covering five third-party terminals, including Gadki and Poznanfranovo in western Poland, and Katyfrowski, Dembrowagnica and Swakow in the south. Earlier this year, Loconi also opened two new corridors to Lodz in central Poland and Auschwitz in the south.
"Loconi will play an important role in our 'node-to-network' strategy, and we will further expand our role as a player in the port ecosystem by developing services around the port, such as multimodal connectivity and digitalisation," said Vincent Ng, regional CEO of PSA Europe & Mediterranean and PSA Central and Southeast Asia.
Multimodal transport is the key to the future development of logistics, and railway, as an important part of it, is increasingly valued by global logistics enterprises. Compared with road transport, rail transport has higher efficiency and lower carbon emissions, and is an important means to achieve sustainable development. PSA's acquisition of Loconi is clearly based on its leading position in the Polish multimodal transport market and its presence on five key corridors in Poland.
Industry insiders said that PSA's acquisition of Loconi is not only to obtain multimodal transport resources in the Polish market, but also to carry out a broader strategic layout in the entire Central and Eastern Europe region. As the geographical center of Europe, Poland has the natural advantage of connecting Eastern and Western Europe, northern and southern Europe. Through this acquisition, PSA intends to build the Port of Gdansk into a container transfer hub in Central and Eastern Europe, thereby radiating the entire Central and Eastern European market. This move will significantly enhance PSA's competitiveness in Europe, allowing it to dominate more complex logistics networks.
