Global capacity rose in August, with MSC adding the most total capacity
Data released by Alphaliner shows that as of August 13, 2024, there were 7,046 container ships in operation worldwide, an increase of 31 vessels from a month earlier (July 12, 2024, the same below), with a total global capacity of 30,426,338TEU and a total operating tonnage of 360,822,842 DWT.
In terms of the ranking of the top 20 liner companies, UniFeeder and Air Iran exchanged the rankings, ranked 17th and 18th respectively, and the rankings of other companies remained unchanged.
In terms of capacity, Mediterranean Shipping continued to be the company with the largest increase in total capacity, increasing by 45,850TEU and now exceeding 6 million TEU to 6,028,525TEU, making it the first liner in the world to exceed 6 million TEU, while increasing its operating vessels by 8 to 847.
Cma CGM increased its total operating capacity by 33,375 TEU to 3,794,622TEU and its operating vessels by 3 to 649; Maersk's total operating capacity increased by 27,865TEU to 4,358,336TEU and its operating vessels increased by 1 to 713.
It is worth noting that of the world's top 20 liner companies, 15 companies have increased their capacity, and only five companies have decreased their capacity, and the decline is small. Among them, Desxiang Shipping reduced its capacity by 2,954TEU and operated 1 ship, which was the company with the largest reduction in capacity.
