In the first half of the year, Hong Kong completed 88.6 million tons of cargo throughput, an increase of 3.4%
On September 3, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released Hong Kong vessel arrivals, port cargo and container statistics for the first half of 2024.

In the first half of this year, Hong Kong handled 88.6 million tons of cargo, up 3.4 percent year-on-year. Among them, the volume of imported goods and export goods were 56.1 million tons and 32.5 million tons, respectively, up 2.8% and 4.3% year-on-year.

In the second quarter, Hong Kong handled 45.8 million tons of cargo, up 2.9 percent from the same period last year. Among them, the volume of imported goods and export goods were 28.6 million tons and 17.2 million tons, respectively, up 0.9% and 6.5%.

In terms of containers, the Port of Hong Kong completed container throughput of 3.44 million TEU in the second quarter, down 6.6% year-on-year. Among them, heavy and empty containers completed 2.73 million TEU and 710,000 TEU, respectively, down 5.9% and 9.3%. Among heavy containers, import and export containers were 1.47 million TEU and 1.26 million TEU, down 6.1% and 5.8%, respectively.

In terms of ships arriving in the second quarter of 2024, compared with the same period last year, there were 4,565 ocean-going vessels arriving in the second quarter of 2024, down 4.6% year-on-year. At the same time, 20,850 river vessels arrived at Hong Kong, an increase of 13%.
