The owners and operators of the Dali have agreed to pay nearly $102 million in restitution to the Baltimore Bridge
The U.S. Department of Justice has announced a settlement over the March collision of the Dali's ship, the Baltimore City Bridge, in which the Singapore company Grace Ocean and operator Synergy Marine will pay nearly $102 million to resolve claims for costs related to damage to the Francis Scott Reef Bridge.

The owners and operators of the Dali have agreed to pay nearly $102 million in restitution to the Baltimore Bridge

The settlement, which is slightly less than the $103 million claimed, will be split between the U.S. Treasury and federal agencies directly affected by the conflict.

"Nearly seven months after the worst transportation disaster in recent history killed six people and caused untold damage, we have reached an important milestone with today's settlement," Principal Deputy Attorney General Benjamin Mizeur said.

The crashed Baltimore Bridge

In the early morning of March 26, the Singapore-flagged "Dali" container ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore due to loss of power, causing the steel bridge to collapse. The accident caused eight construction workers on the bridge deck to fall into the water, two of them were rescued, the other six were killed, the port was paralyzed, the channel was blocked, and an important highway was blocked. About 50,000 tons of steel, concrete and asphalt had to be removed from shipping lanes and ships.

Principal Deputy Attorney General Benjamin Mizeur added, "Thanks to the hard work of DOJ attorneys from day one of the disaster, we were able to resolve the claims as early as possible, more than a month after the litigation began." This settlement ensures that the cost of the federal government's cleanup efforts at Fort McHenry Sound will be borne by Grace Ocean and Synergy and not by U.S. taxpayers."

After Grace Ocean and Synergy sought to limit their liability to $43.7 million, the U.S. Department of Justice filed the lawsuit on Sept. 18. Previously, the U.S. government had paid $87,294 to the Coast Guard's National Pollution Fund Center to limit pollution.

The money won't be used to repair the bridge, which is being paid solely by the state of Maryland, which built, maintained and operated the bridge.
