According to the Spanish rescue agency Salvamento Maritimo, it was notified of the collision at around 05:20 am and immediately sent two patrol boats to the scene to assess the situation. At the time of the collision, the tanker Gloria Maris was leaving the Gibraltar anchorage and crossing the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean, while the container ship HMM St Petersburg was crossing the strait east towards the port of Algeciras.

The HMM St Petersburg, built in 2020 with a capacity of up to 239,64TEU, flies the Korean flag and is owned and operated by HMM. THE ship, serving the Alliance FE4 (Far East-Europe 4) route, was fully loaded with cargo from the Chinese port of Yantian, after a six-week voyage around Africa, and was scheduled to stop at Algeciras before continuing on its Asia-Europe route. The route is connected to the four ports of Tianjin Xingang, Qingdao, Shanghai and Shenzhen Yantian.

The collision caused structural damage to both vessels, but fortunately no injuries or contamination were reported. There were 24 crew members on the HMM St Petersburg and 25 crew members on the Gloria Maris, all of whom were safe and sound.

After the accident, the Algeciras Maritime Agency has ordered the two vessels to be detained and inspected by safety officers to determine the cause of the accident. After determining that there was no immediate danger, the HMM St Petersburg was allowed to sail into its Algeciras port berth while the tanker was ordered to wait at its anchorage.
