A state of emergency has been declared at Black Sea ports in response to environmental pollution
Due to the recent fuel spill caused by a serious tanker distress incident in the Kerch Strait, the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol, located on the southwestern tip of the Crimean Peninsula, officially declared a state of emergency on January 4, 2025 to deal with possible environmental pollution risks.
Sevastopol Mayor Razvozaev updated the public on the day the state of emergency was declared. He pointed out that although the main coastline of Sevastopol has not been directly affected by large-scale oil pollution, the relevant authorities have found traces of oil in many parts of the sea, which indicates that the fuel spill has had a certain impact on the surrounding environment. In view of this, the municipal government has decided to immediately activate the district-level emergency mechanism to ensure that the potential pollution threat can be quickly and effectively addressed.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations issued a notice on December 15, 2024, saying that under the influence of severe weather conditions such as strong winds and high waves, two Russian oil tankers encountered serious danger in the Kerch Strait, damaging their hulls and running aground. Subsequently, a large fuel spill occurred in the accident area, posing a serious environmental risk to the surrounding sea.
In order to eliminate the contamination as soon as possible, Russian rescue workers quickly launched a cleanup operation. After several consecutive days of efforts, as of January 4, 2025, rescue workers have successfully cleaned up more than 86,000 tons of contaminated sediment, effectively curbing the further expansion of the scope of pollution. However, in view of the potential for the oil to spread to a wider area with the current, the city government of Sevastopol has decided to remain on high alert and continue to strengthen monitoring and clean-up efforts.
The declaration of the state of emergency signals that the city of Sevastopol will take more stringent measures to deal with the environmental challenges caused by fuel spills. The municipal government will strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations and other relevant departments to jointly develop and implement more effective pollution prevention and control and cleanup programs. At the same time, the public is also urged to remain vigilant and avoid entering potentially contaminated sea areas without permission or coming into contact with oil pollution.
In the coming days and weeks, the city of Sevastopol will closely monitor the spread of the oil and the progress of the cleanup work, and adjust the emergency measures according to the actual situation. The city government has pledged to do its utmost to protect citizens' lives and health, as well as the ecological environment of the surrounding waters.
