The United States plans to impose sanctions on more than 100 Russian oil tankers
After nearly two years of war between Russia and Ukraine, the Biden administration plans to further increase sanctions against Russia. The latest news is that the US government intends to impose a new round of sanctions on tankers carrying Russian crude oil, especially those that sell Russian crude above the western price ceiling of $60 per barrel.
According to Reuters, the Biden administration's latest sanctions plan affects two Russian oil companies, more than 100 oil tankers, as well as insurance companies and traders associated with Rosneft deals.
In addition, the sanctions could also affect individuals and networks involved in trading oil above the price ceiling. The second source said the sanctions could target some individuals involved in such deals, further hitting Russia's oil trading networks.
Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the United States and its Allies have imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Russia in an attempt to use economic means to force Russia to halt its military operations. However, despite the price caps imposed by Western countries on Russian oil, Russia has continued to bypass the sanctions by using so-called "shadow fleets" to export crude oil to the global market.
Russian crude oil prices are generally below the global market average, making countries like India willing to continue buying Russian oil. An official said the US government had informed India's foreign ministry of the impending sanctions. India's foreign ministry has not responded to a Reuters request for comment.
Shipping experts point out that many "shadow fleet" vessels are less safe and prone to oil spills. This not only poses a threat to the environment, but also poses a challenge to the security of global shipping.
It is worth noting that the timing of the Biden administration's sanctions is quite significant. With Trump set to take office on January 20, the Biden administration clearly wants to consolidate support for Ukraine before he takes office. Trump has repeatedly complained about the high cost of U.S. support for Ukraine and has shown an ambiguous attitude toward Russia. Therefore, the Biden administration's sanctions are not only a pressure on Russia, but also a pre-layout for Trump's future policy.
Trump's stance on Russia sanctions, however, is unclear. During his previous tenure, he has repeatedly expressed admiration for Putin and sought to improve U.S.-Russian relations. The Biden administration's efforts could be undermined if sanctions on Russia are eased under Trump.
