Global container ship orders will exceed 9 million TEU for the first time
Recently, the global container shipping market set off a new round of shipbuilding boom, including Evergreen Shipping, CMA, Hapag-Lloyd and other liner giants, intensive release of order signals.
On February 12, Evergreen Shipping issued two shipping orders, announcing that it had ordered 6 and 5 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from Hanwha Ocean and China Shipbuilding Group's Guangsheng International, respectively, for a total of 11 ships.
It is understood that the transaction price of each vessel is between $265 million and $295 million. Among them, Evergreen Shipping's deals with Hanwha Marine totaled 1.59 billion to 1.77 billion U.S. dollars, and its deals with GF International totaled 1.325 billion to 1.475 billion U.S. dollars.
According to industry analyst Alphaliner's report, CMA CGM is about to sign another contract with a Chinese shipyard to build 12 18,000 TEU container ships after signing an order with Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea not long ago.
In addition, Hapag-Lloyd is also finalizing new shipbuilding orders, planning to order six 16,800 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from Hanwha Marine for a total transaction value of about $1.2 billion.
"At present, many new shipbuilding projects are still under negotiation and several orders are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks," said MB Shipbroking in its latest report.
The report also mentioned that due to the relatively limited order demand for tankers, liquefied natural gas vessels and bulk carriers, many shipyards are still focused on new container ship projects, so the current price of new container ships has stabilized and payment terms have been relaxed.
According to data released by the Baltic International Shipping Association (BIMCO), by the end of 2024, global container ship orders stood at 8.3 million TEU, the highest level in history. At present, this record is still being refreshed, and if the above orders are finally confirmed, the global container ship order volume will exceed 9 million TEU for the first time, accounting for 28% of the global operating capacity.
Alphaliner's statistics show that the current global operating container fleet has a total capacity of 31.7 million TEU. It took the shipping industry about 50 years to reach 5 million TEU in 2001. By comparison, the leap from 20 million TEU to 30 million TEU took just seven years.
In the future, how to find a balance between capacity expansion and market demand will become a key issue faced by liner companies and the shipping industry.
