A Boeing 737 cargo plane operated by German logistics company DHL has crashed
A cargo plane taking off from Leipzig, Germany, crashed and caught fire near Vilnius airport in Lithuania early Tuesday. So far, one person has been killed and three injured, and local officials have not ruled out the possibility of terrorism.
According to Lithuanian police, the plane took off from the eastern German city of Leipzig and crashed into homes, small buildings and cars, setting one house ablaze.
According to Flightradar24, the cargo plane was a Boeing 737-476(SF) aircraft. The cargo plane took off from the eastern German city of Leipzig and crashed about an hour and a half later near Vilnius airport in Lithuania. The area is not densely populated, with a few single-family houses.
German express logistics company DHL said the cargo plane, operated by its partner airline Swiftair, had made an emergency landing in Lithuania. A staff member of DHL, the logistics company owned by Deutsche Post, said it was not clear what caused the accident or what was on board.
Lithuanian officials have not linked the crash to an investigation over the past few weeks into allegations that Molotov cocktails were sent from cargo planes bound for Western countries.
Lithuanian National Security Minister Darius Jauniskis said it was too early to link the cargo plane crash to anything or blame it on any factor.
Vilnius Airport continued to operate as usual, with some flights cancelled or delayed.
