The MSC Baltic III ran aground off the west coast of Newfoundland
On Feb. 15, a Liberian-flagged container ship, MSC BALTIC III, ran aground near Lark Harbour on Newfoundland's west coast after losing power due to bad weather.
Maritime Communications and Traffic Services in Port Basque received a distress call from the container ship after the accident, which was about 12 nautical miles from the entrance to the Bay of Newfoundland, Canada.
It is understood that the weather conditions at the time were bad, with winds of more than 120 kilometers per hour and waves up to 6 meters. The MSC BALTIC III was unable to anchor and ran aground in Wild Cove on the western side of Port Lac.
The Canadian Coast Guard dispatched the icebreaker Henry Larsen and a Cormorant helicopter to assist in the rescue, and the Cormorant helicopter was able to rescue all 20 crew members from the MSC BALTIC III without any injuries.
The MSC Baltic III, built in 2003, is owned by NordBaltic and is currently leased to MSC, the world's largest container shipping company.
The incident caused widespread concern, especially among residents of Newfoundland and nearby Larke Harbour. Many residents and family members have expressed concern for the crew's safe return. Newfoundland Premier Andrew Furey took to social media to thank all the workers involved in the rescue, saying they fought through the blizzard to ensure the crew's lives were safe.
