A three-alarm fire has destroyed containers at a cargo handling area in Hong Kong
At 5pm on 14 October, a three-alarm fire broke out in the New Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area in Hong Kong. The fire was fierce at the scene, with multiple containers on fire and accompanied by explosions, and the fire once spread to nearby ships.
According to initial reports, the area of the fire is about 400 square meters (another version is 20 meters by 20 meters) and involves 10 shipping containers, which are up to three stories high.
The fire started in the loading area at 38 Hoi Fai Road, where recycled materials, including metal, wood and rubber products, were piled up in an open space. These materials may have played a role in the fire, but the specific cause of the fire is still to be further investigated.
The fire continued to shoot water from various sides, and the smoke rose into the air and spread to nearby pontoons. Not only from Tsim Sha Tsui, but also from Wan Chai on the other side of Victoria Harbour.
According to Hong Kong media reports on the scene, the fire was small at first, but due to the lack of water at the scene and a lot of flammable materials, the fire gradually spread. At about 19 o 'clock on the same day, the fire had been initially controlled, and the fire trucks and fire boats had stopped spraying water one after another, but then the fire suddenly resumed, and firefighters used water pipes again to extinguish the fire. At present, the fire is visually under control, and there is still a lot of smoke at the scene.
Fire Services Department District Officer (Kowloon South) Lai Ka-hang said the fire involved about 10 containers, up to three storeys high. After the initial assessment, we believe that there is a risk that these containers may collapse during the fire filling process, thus causing additional difficulties to the fire crews. The site needs to use more than three water sources, street well water use, the farthest street well away from the fire more than 400 meters, there is a certain difficulty in opening the throat. In addition, in order to obtain more stable water sources, fire boats were mobilized to the nearby shore and directly pumped seawater.
The fire has seriously affected the normal operation of the new Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area. There was a long queue of container trucks outside the loading and unloading area, which could not be picked up and unloaded. The Fire Services Department said it will continue to carry out clean-up and investigation work at the site to ensure normal operations can resume as soon as possible.
