Russia has announced a crackdown on Chinese cars
On February 10, the Russian Bureau of Technical Regulations and Metrology announced the cancellation of a product certification of China's commercial vehicle enterprise Shaanxi Automobile heavy truck, suspending its sales in Russia, after Russia had imported 15,000 of the heavy truck. According to the report, the agency tested that the product did not meet a series of mandatory Russian requirements in terms of noise control, rear collision avoidance and side protection.

Russia has announced a crackdown on Chinese cars

According to land media reports, since 2023, Russia has become the largest market for Chinese automobile exports. In 2022, China exported 162,000 vehicles to Russia, and in 2023, the number of exports increased 461.1% year-on-year to 909,000 vehicles. In 2024, China's automobile exports to Russia reached 1.158 million units, accounting for about 20% of China's automobile exports.

Arihanov said: "More stringent certification is needed, especially for compliance checks of vehicles in mass production batches. We have conducted such an analysis of trucks and found three Chinese brands with serious defects that simply cannot be allowed on the road. In this case, we will take measures, including revoking the certificate, and will cooperate with the General Prosecutor's Office."

It is understood that since the Russian conflict and the sanctions imposed by Western countries, the market share of Chinese cars in Russia has been increasing. Chinese media previously reported that the share of Chinese-made new cars in the Russian new car market has stabilized at 68%, and seven of the top 10 brands in new car sales are from China.

Russia cracks down on Chinese cars

Arihanov pointed out that the Chinese auto industry is actively entering the Russian market and is constantly expanding its market share. In order to restore the balance, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is gradually adjusting the recovery tax, but this measure is not enough.

But since 2024, Russia has taken a series of measures to tighten car imports.

As of January 1, 2025, car and trailer recycling taxes in Russia have been increased by 10-20%. The increase in the recovery tax for passenger cars depends on the engine power, and the increase in the recovery tax for trucks depends on the age and weight of the vehicle.

Alikhanov recently said in an interview with Russian media that in order to support the development of local auto companies, the Russian side has asked local auto companies including Chinese companies to increase the proportion of Russian parts.

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone and expressed their willingness to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. If the European and American sanctions are lifted after the end of the war, the pattern of the Russian auto market will change.
